2007 NBS(New Body Style)Chevrolet Silverado 5.3 V8 vortec engine. 2 lifters fail in video. I had a coolant leak, So I decided to change head gaskets and have the cylinder heads resurfaced, do a valve job and replace the lifters, since I have 205,000 miles on my truck. I took the Cylinder Heads off my self and paid a shop to put ithem back on. I also bought new lifters and when I got the truck back this was the sound it was making. I had to take the cylinder heads back off, AGAIN and I made this video. It turns out the AFM lifter was in backwards. These engines have 8 Afm Lifters and 8 non-Afm Lifters. The Afm lifters for this vehicle belong in cylinders 1,4,6,7. The plastic lifter retainer has grooves in the plastic, so the Afm lifter can only go in one way. It can easily go in the wrong direction and can be installed into the lifter retainer backwards. There is a tiny hole in the center of the lifter, make sure to place all lifters with holes facing the same direction, then install it into the engine block with all holes facing the camshaft. You can easily make sure the Afm lifters are installed correctly by lifting them up and down.If they arent installed correctly into the lifter retainer, the afm lifters will be stuck and will not move. This is critical when installing new afm lifters. It’s recommended to replace the VLOM that sits between the cylinders but if it hasn’t given you any issues and still looks good you can re-use it. Just clean the filter under the oil pressure sensor, take it out carefully with a screwdriver. If you have the money to spend, I would replace the VLOM, GM has designed a new VLOM after original. Make sure to buy Permatex-Copper Spray a Gasket and spray it on both sides of the cylinder head gasket. This will prevent any small gap or coolant leak from happening. Then buy Permatex #2 and put this on the cylinder head bolts this will prevent any leaks going through your cylinder head bolts. It’s best to get a die the size of the 11 mm bolts and tap to make threads in the engine block. There is also 8 mm bolts. (Make sure) If you have any questions email ..Today is 3/4/2015, This is an update on the vehicle after I installed the lifters correctly and reassembled the vehicle. It has never ran better! This was extremely stressful and took so much time and money out of my own pocket but I am really happy with the way it runs. It runs better than before and I believe the Spray A Gasket plus the Permatex#2 really prevented any small leaks. I don’t have one drip of coolant leaking.
